Beijing Foton Motor Co., Ltd. (Foton Motor) is a public corporation of multi-industries over different regions, industries and ownerships. The first shareholder of Foton Motor is Beijing Motor Industry Shareholding Co., Ltd. The headquarter locates in Beijing. The corporation possesses a total asset of more than RMB 12 billion and is staffed with about 20,000 personals.
The corporation scale of the company expands rapidly. With management and research center based in Beijing, it has built production bases for whole and parts of vehicles over 9 provinces and cities, such as Beijing, Tianjin and Shandong Province. Also it has research organizations in Taiwan province of China, Japan and Europe. Foton’s automobile industry has covered all kinds of commercial vehicles, with its 9 major brands including ‘Auman’, ‘Auv’, ‘Aumark’ and ‘MOX’, etc.
Foton Motor got founded in August, 1996, at the time when the implementation of socialist market economy was in its initial stages. During the following 12 years, the total sales of automobile exceeded 2.4 million units, and all of them are in China independent brands and owning independent intellectual property. For 4 consecutive years, its production and sales has been No.1 of all commercial vehicle companies in China. In the field of light truck, the vehicle dominated the market for 9 consecutive years. In 2007, the company’s sales exceeded 400,000 units for the first time, only second to Benz in world commercial vehicle industry. The brand value of Foton Motor has reached RMB 22.157 billion, ranking the first among independent domestic automobile companies.
Being one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in China, Foton Motor has always been sticking to self-innovation and building independent brand. It has created an innovation mode called ‘integrating knowledge, linking innovation’, and later became the typical innovative independent company in China. This kind of mode stresses the need to break through the old developing norms within a single company, argues that instead, it should raise its ability in resource conformity and innovative linkage of manufacturing, by ways of project cooperation and strategic alliance, etc., to improve the competitiveness of the company.
Until now, Foton Motor owns more than 200 national patents, nearly 20 of which are invention patents. The investment of independent innovation has been on the top of the whole industry, which sums up to more than RMB 3 billion, i.e. 3.5 percent to 4 percent of its sales income. In 2007, it spent RMB 1 billion in building an international advanced laboratory in energy saving and emission reduction. In January, 2008, 30 of Foton Auv hybrid bus launched in Guangzhou bus lines officially. Thus, Foton Motor has become the first automobile company which realized the commercialization of hybrid products. One of the ‘Eleventh Five Year Plan’ and ‘863’ projects, cooperating with Tsinghua University – the fuel battery bus has also been used in Olympic dedicated bus routes for try-out. In all, Foton Motor’s self-innovation and independent brand is its ultimate drive for better and faster development.
Today, the distribution net of Foton Motor has been scattered over 70 countries and regions in West Asia, North Africa, East Europe and South Asia, with an increasing rate of 35 percent every year in export sales. In 2007, the export vehicle number reached nearly 30,000 units, increased by net 66.17 percent and ranking in the 4th place among Chinese exporting automobile companies.
According to the blueprint of Foton Motor, during China’s ‘Eleventh Five Year Plan’, the annual sales will reach 800,000 to 1 million units, more than 20 percent of which being overseas; in ‘Twelfth Five Year Plan’, the annual sales will exceed 1.5 million units, more than 30 percent of which being overseas, and thus become an international automobile company. The value of Chinese commercial vehicles will also be exhibited and advanced during the process of Foton Motor’s development.
